Audience Theories

Consumption of media

Primary media: you chose to do something for example going to the cinemas. Primary media demands close attention and concentration from audience.

Secondary media: provides a background audience who are doing something else at the same time for example texting while listening to the radio or watching TV.

Tertiary media: media being around you however it might not be noticeable straight away. For example adverts on the bus. Tertiary media is when you’re unaware of your engagement with the media.

Digipak

digipak.

In side the album we have a varitey of different images of the band and on the image names of each song, we did this as it makes the images more interesting and the reader may get to know and remember the songs more, by seeing the songs by flicking threw the album.
We used these images as they shows band members with a guitars and musical equipment we did this as it is showing to the audience that the band is very musical and make there own music.
We also showed the band being fun and laid back which may make the audience like them and relate to them. The images also contribute to the genre of our music video as the clothes they are wearing look indie.

This page in our digipack gives all the information that the audience may want to know about who took part in making this album, also theres a note of the band which help the audience know the band really appericiate the fans.

The back cover shows a image of the whole band, looking happy at the camera. We used the same effect as what we did on the tourpost so it is all the same theme, we put a white background on the writing so it stood out and used a font of 'urban fonts' to make it more interesting to read for the audience. We put all production and distribution information and logos on the album as all albums have them on so the audience know you helped make it and can also find out for information about them if they wish. We put the bands myspace website on the back too as the audience may want to go on it and find out more about the band and there music.

Our front cover shows a black and white image to stay with the colour scheme, we then used the same font as the tour poster and back cover of the cd for the band name and title of the album, as it stays out agasint the dark background. 'The Tantrums' it is big capital letters in the top left corner as it is the main thing people will look at then the album name, the the bottom right corner in smaller writing as people will look for that second.

Here is our inner for our digipack, we choose to keep the colour scheme, and used images of the band being fun to show the audience more of what they are like.

a2 eval questions

1.    Our media product challenges the codes and conventions of indie/pop. Our music video’s narrative is told backwards, this makes our music video more interesting and different from the rest of the music videos that’s out there.
Narrative and narrative theory  -Torodovs theory suggests that in every story there is an equilibrium, then a disequilibrium then finally an equilibrium.
In our video we used a non-linear narrative, which shows a backwards story, but we still show Torodovs theory in the video as we still have a beginning, middle and an ending. In the story you’ll see the couple getting along, then the disequilibrium where we find out about the cheating we also have a new equilibrium where everything is calm but things have changed for example the boy looking at their photo frame of the couple, yet they are not together. We also have Strauss theory (Binary opposites) in our video as there is a boy and girl who are known as opposites yet our video challenges this as normally the boy is known to be the one cheating yet in our video it is the girl cheating.
My media product uses forms and conventions of a real media product.
My media product has a narrative, so we’ve got a story, a beginning, middle and an ending. Our music video uses torodovs theory because it has equilibrium, then disequilibrium then a new equilibrium.
Our media product has no performance; this is because we had no artist.
The music video was timed to beat. This is because the writing at the start when we talk about the song ‘naïve’ we used no music until the writing faded away then the music came in.
We have used close up of artists in our music video.
We have used tracking on our music video. This is when the camera follows the actions of our actors in the video. The camera follows Emma and Alex up the stairs and in the bedroom.
Our whole music video uses voyeurism. Our music video was being watched the whole time.
We video has lots of editing, for example in out video we have used a zoom effect, cuts and fades. This allows our music video to stand out and it becomes more interesting. This builds tension and creates concentration on a specific shot in the video.
The mise en scene in our music video represents the indie genre. For example Alex’s hair and the clothes he wears matches the indie genre altogether.
The music video has a narrative theory. We have a story and it follows a theory too.

for the digipak and the advert we created logos and we took pictures.
as for the logos, we used several websites to come up with a confirmed logo. i made the logos and kelly and anna were in charge of the advert. in terms of the logo, i had to make approximatley 8 to 10 different sort of logos and then the group confirmed the two that they wanted to use.

Digipak & Advert-
Cds use conventions such as
  • Artists name and image.
  • Album name
  • Barcode
  • Songs
  • Llogos

________________________________________________________________________

We used black and white for most of our tasks, this is because its linked to indie, its muted and simple.
We had continuity in the music video because of the variety of shots, cuts and edits. This keeps the narrative flowing.

Advertisment

First poster before feedback.

Second poster after reading first lot of feedback.

We used black and white for our advertisement because the colour of the texts and the fonts would stand out therefore the important information on the advert would be visible.
Dates and the city were put in the advert because the fans would like to know that more than anything else.
We used a guitar for our background image because it’s linked to the music and band. We also put in our advert facebook, twitter and myspace logos. This allows fans to get more information online and it improves the quality of the advert since the advert is modern.

2.  How effective is the combination of your main video and ancillary product?

We had a simple and clear narrative, a story that was told backwards that makes our product unique and more interesting because our narrative draws audience and creates tension.

The costumes in our music video fit the genre which is indie. This allows attracting the right audience for our music video. The actors costume fits the indie genre and this also fits in with the CD.

Our music video is a primary media because people are choosing to watch our video either through facebook or YouTube however the audience will have to pay attention to understand what is going on since our narrative is backwards.

The fonts and colours used on the digipack and poster are black and white which fits in with our video, so they’re linked.

Our digipak and poster was our main ancillary product. We made sure there was a clear link between the digipak and the media products such as the poster and the music video. The link between these was the colour and the costumes. The colour remained black and white all around and our actors had indie costume in our video and media products.

3.    What have you learned from audience feedback?
People said:
·         I think it’s really good, especially the start with the writing on the black screen
·         I think with some of the camera shots, (unless I’m wrong if their handheld) could be a bit steadier.
·         Maybe that the filming is a bit shaky in parts but that’s not even bad, I only noticed it once.
·         it’s really good, like loads of different camera shots and good cuts used so there’s continuity but just a bit too many zoom in zoom out
·          The writing at the start introduced the video, it helped make sense but you don’t normally see it in videos.

After hearing the feedback I learned that our music video had good and was something that entertained the audience. I also learned that having writing at the start of the video was good because it allowed the audience to make better sense of the video however the audience thought it wasn’t normal to have writing at the start of the video. If we were to do the music video again we would make sure we have a steady camera.  At the same time our audience thought that we had continuity in the music video because of the variety of shots, cuts and edits in the music video.

4. How have you used new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
We used blogger to update our work that we did in our groups. Blogger was a useful site that we used because we had the advantage of posting pictures and other people (teacher and friends) can post comments. All the research, planning, permission, and evaluation are in the blog.

We used YouTube to research similar music, then we analysed the music we had researched, confirmed our music choice as a group.

Google was one of the sites we used the most, if there was something we had to research on or get some background information on something or if we needed any pictures then Google was the first thing that came to mind.

As Alex has a similar style to what we chose for the costumes, we have chose the following outfits from ASOS.com based on the knowledge of Alex's style.
Our model Emma Yates has her own lookbook online (www.lookbook.nu/emmayates)
so we have taken the photographs of her outfits from that, it is exactly how we want her to look, classy and sophisticated but also sexy. She is perfect for our music video.

We used some fonts for our magazine from http://www.dafont.com/. This was a helpful site because it had a variety of fonts for us to choose from for our coursework.

Facebook is a good site because facebook allows us (group) and friends to comment on our music video.
We used a camera for recording our music video and taking pictures of the bedroom, shot lists story boards etc.

We used a memory card to save our files and the music video itself. Without the memory card our coursework would have been much harder because we wouldn’t have been able to save the work. The memory card was useful because it meant that we could easily transfer files from the camera into the computer then finally the blog.

We used Photoshop to edit our pictures. We cropped pictures, added effects, inserted backgrounds etc.
We used premiere elements to edit our music video, to add effects, edit and crop shots. We could also add music to the video and edit the music too.

For our Animatics we used windows movie maker, we added our shots that we took with our camera, added music to the background, and this gave us a rough idea of how our music video would look like after it’s all done.

We used a memory stick (hard drive) to take our work home and we worked on it while we were at home, some files were too large to be uploaded on to our email.

Feedback

From our audience feedback we learnt that when we first did our tourposter the image on the back ground was very dark so people didnt know what the image was, or what type of genre the music is.
We were told there was lots of detail provided on how to buy tickets and dates which is good for the audience.
The face that we kept a colour, black and white contrast worked really well.
The only downside was the image on the poster was dark and hard to notice so we made it brighter and easier to see. We were then told the image of the guitar shows the genre but they wouldnt have  over lapped the writing on the guitar. So if we did it again we'd think more about where to put the website, phone number and social network site or just make the writing smaller.

Which asked people what they thought it was.
Everyone said it was a poster of tour dates or poster for a music concert.
This is good as everyone knows what it is, and what we were advertising.

We asked what genre it was for.
Majority of people said it was indie/pop.
This is good because we know it will attract the right audience.

We asked if it was informative.
They said yes, because of the phone number, dates, websites etc.
This is good as we know we have put enough information on the poster for our audience, the audience knows who is performing, where and they know how to get tickets.

Is it credible?
And everyone said yes.
This is good as we used the codes and conventions of a real tourposter which we learn from our research.

This is what our audience have said, and from our audience theories we think our video fits into these theory’s:
Uses and Gratifications- Blumers and Kats, as audiences may may watch it for entertainment to enjoy the music video and to fill time and also they may watch it for personal identity as they may relate to the actors in it, as they may have experiences being in a relationship being cheated on.

Also the two step flow theory, as if people see our music video and talk about it to their friends it may change there opinion on it and see it in a different way.

Effects Models

Hypodermic needle theory
Our music video injects ideas and beliefs into the audience. The problem with this theory is the fact that everyone thinks differently therefore and the audience are affected in different ways by the media.

Two step flow
The audience would be much more affected by the media if it was discussed.
Our music can be watched and discussed with other people. We would have a bigger audience too.
If this video link was shared on facebook or YouTube, and the media text is good then more people will talk about the text and we would get more audience and feedback.

Uses and gratification
Media and technology has advanced and the new generation have grown up with the TV, bill boards, phones etc.
Media can be used in four different ways.
1.       Diversion – this is escape from everyday problems and routine. For example you decide to watch something on television and an advert pops up. Another example is driving on a daily basis and you see and an advert on the bill boards that divert your attention.
2.       Personal relationship – using media for emotional and other interaction.
3.       Personal identity
4.       Surveillance -
